Ribatejo

The Ribatejo region is located in central southern Portugal. The region is characterised by fertile alluvial soils and is dominated by co-operatives. The best wines however, come from vineyards far from the river Tagus and are made by winemakers experimenting with international grapes.

Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima is located 2 km from Alpiarça and stretches along the southern bank of the river Tagus. Its long history as a wine producer can be seen from the fact that in 1888 it was present at the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition, presenting 600 wine casks.

The estate, which formerly belonged to the 2nd Duke of Palmela, has been passed to his descendants and is now the property of Sociedade Agrícola da Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima. The oenologist, Diogo Campilho, is one of the promising figure heads of the new generation.

The vineyards are located in the best ‘terroirs’ of Ribatejo and indigenous Portuguse grapes as well as international grapes are planted. Both the vineyards and the winery use New World techniques, region ‘terroir’ and Portuguese grapes to make innovative wines.
