The big wine estates and flat plains of Alentejo are often compared to those of California. Alentejo is a wine region with an image of modernity and of excellent wines. Located in the south of Portugal, which is characterised by hot summers and rocky soils, this region produces elegant wines with distinct flavours of lovely ripe fruits and balanced tannins.
This is the home of Herdade do Pinheiro, owned by the Silvestre Ferreira family, and Ribeira da Ervideira, owned by the Leal da Costa family.
The Silvestre Ferreira family has been producing wines for more than one hundred years. The grand children continued the tradition of having the winery equipped with the best machinery and also re-structured the vineyards. The resulting wines are full-bodied, rounded, aromatic and fruity.
The Leal da Costa family are the heirs of the Earl of Ervideira. The nobleman was notorious for making wines; the first ones dated from 1880. Since then the vineyards of Monte da Ribeira and Herdadinha produce fruity and enjoyable wines, one of which is the Conde d’Ervideira Reserva - the most traditional one.
